In 1983, 87 unrecognized representatives from the TPLF and other puppet political parties formed an illegitimate government called the Ethiopian Transitional Government, which excluded the country's largest and most populous Amhara state. In the same year, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), led by Isaiah Afewerk, split Eritrea and formed a government after 30 years of unity. To make matters worse, the TPLF, with the help of foreign powers, remained in power until May 1985 and established an illegitimate government in 1987, making Ethiopia a country where human rights are still severely violated and unstable.
