ROCK HEWN CHURCH LALIBELA ETHIOPIA

Some of the rock-hewn buildings in our country and in other parts of the world are based on previously built caves. From the cave, they are carved out of stone, imitating the usual architectural style. Some, however, are carved out of the ground or on the side of a mountain by carving a large boulder.

The churches of Lalibela are among the types of underground or underground structures. This is done as usual, not from the base of the building, but from the roof. This approach is more like sculpting than building. The famous medieval tax collector Michael Angelo described the sculpture as saying: "Every solid has a shape in it. The work of the sculptor is to free this shape from the crushed stone.

The 15th-century Lalibela author similarly describes the structure of the Lalibela churches:

"The time has come for these churches to work from the heart of the earth in Lalibela: for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
